Work Descriptions
At ADTRAN co-ops can expect hands on experience in several different aspects of the telecommunications industry. Here is a list and description of the groups one can expect to work in at ADTRAN. As a co-op, you will spend at least one term in one of the design engineering groups.
Enterprise Networks Design Engineering
Depending on the group co-ops work on hardware and software design tasks that will be manageable and most are able to be finished in one work term. Enterprise Networks is responsible for the equipment on the customer end telecommunications. Some of the groups in Enterprise Networks include: ATLAS, Tracer/Wireless, DDS, T1 CSU/DSU, T1 MUX. Typically a second or third work term job.
Carrier Networks Design Engineering
Depending on the group co-ops work on hardware and software design tasks that will be manageable and most are able to be finished in one work term. Carrier Networks is responsible for the equipment on the telephone company side of telecommunications. Some of the groups in Carrier Networks include: Management Systems, Circuit to Packet Products, Packet Switched Products, Optical, TDM, Analog, Mixed Mode, ADSL/SHDSL/HDSL, Total Reach, Systems Engineering. Typically a second or third work term job.
Mechanical Engineering
This group designs electronics packaging for telecommunications equipment. The design work includes 3D parametric CAD modeling and drafting of the equipment. Design styles include sheet metal fabrication, plastic injection molding, castings, extrusions, and OEM components. This is a good job for any work term.
Technical Support
"Real" work for "real" customers with "real" problems. Become part of a team dedicated to customer service. While the sales department is responsible for getting new customers, Technical Support is responsible for KEEPING customers! The job they do influences whether or not a customer will continue to purchase ADTRAN equipment or not. You will have a definite impact on the ?bottom line? of our company. If you are customer-service oriented and enjoy troubleshooting real world issues; then we will teach you everything technical you need to know. We would love to have you become part of our team. This is a good job for any work term.
Product Qualification (PQ)
This is a typical group for first work term coops. In PQ, co-ops get hands-on experience testing and configuring all of ADTRAN's products. There are many opportunities to learn the various technologies that ADTRAN uses while working in this energetic, social group. As you do your work tour of the company, you will find yourself always coming back here to visit or to test designs.
Test Engineering
There are a variety of things that test engineering is responsible for. This group builds test racks for manufacturing and engineering departments, debugs Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) and conducts many tests. This is a job for any work term.
Technology Staff
In the staff group, co-ops work with some of the brightest people at ADTRAN. The Technology Staff is responsible for coming up with ideas for products that ADTRAN should make 5 to 10 years down the road. Co-ops get to work on several research projects and if they're lucky, they'll even get to publish their own ADTRAN memorandum. Typically a third to fourth term/intern job.
Component Engineering
Every component used in ADTRAN products has to be approved by component engineering before it can be used, so whenever a designer needs to use a new component, Component Engineering tests it for thermal shock, flammability, resistance, capacitance, etc. They are also the connection between the Design engineers and the component manufacturers. This is typically a first work term job.
Compliance
In compliance, co-ops get to see how engineers have to manipulate designs in order to accommodate FCC, NEBS, and other standards. Students learn the test procedures to test all of the equipment that is made here at ADTRAN. Every piece of equipment that is made at ADTRAN must go through compliance before it can be released. This is a job for either first or second work terms.
Applications Engineering
Applications engineering is responsible for all pre-sales technical support. Co-ops are expected to learn about all the different WAN & LAN technologies and protocols that are used in ADTRAN's products. Co-ops speak with end users, sales personnel, and network device providers about the features, capabilities, and advantages of ADTRAN's products. This is an excellent first or summer term job.
Strategic Software
Strategic Software is a programmer's paradise. Co-ops write code for various products to help reduce the size of code and code space, and they learn how to develop software that makes ADTRAN's products more effective. This job is typically for second work terms and above.
